Today’s Just For Fun Topic Is....Some Shows Work Better When Binge Watched And Some Work Well As Weekly Episodic Watching But There Are Some Shows That Can Work With A Little Bit Of Both Mixed In. Are There Some Comic/Sci-fi/Fantasy Shows That You Have Watched This Way Either Intentionally Or Unintentionally That You Enjoyed???

Well right now for me it’s 12 Monkeys which is on the 2nd week if it’s four week, binge light, series ending run. I have to tell you, it works for this show. They did a version of it with season three’s three night binge event but this year is just a bit better because of its spacing. It gives you time to catch up quickly yet space to enjoy the three episodes more instead right into the next episode.

Don’t get me wrong binge watching can be great but sometimes you just rush thru them to tell people yeah I watched it. Lol. This way seems to work a bit better.

What are your thoughts and shows that fit this criteria for you if any my friends??? Hey maybe you did your own version of this, let us know what shows and how it worked out. #CBCJustForFun]]>

AT&T buying Time Warner approved. <=> I don't like it, not at all. The Administration was right to fight, but lost.

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/06/12/att-time-warner-ruling.html

The Trump admin may have been right for the wrong reasons, in part (but I sincely don't think only) because of Trump's disdain for Time Warner's CNN. There are plenty of good reasons for opposing this type of merger. Even though it's supposedly not a competition-removing merger, as Time Warner (a media content company only) and AT&T (a telephone, data, internet, and DirecTV communications provider) do not directly complete, it's still media concentration. It was bad enough when Disney was allowed to buy ABC, when Comcast was allowed to buy NBC Universal (where then-GE's NBC had already swallowed Universal Studios), when Verizon was allowed to buy AOL and Yahoo. Now it's far worse. (By the way, plenty of pols with "D" after their names, not just "R", allowed those abominations to happen.)

With the AT&T/Time Warner merger, one of the largest means of distribution of content now will be in the same hands, funded by and feeding profits back into the same pockets, as one of the largest creators of content. One of the most-historic names of each industry - even if not really the original companies of those names, the inheritors/usurpers of those great companies.

By the way, before I go any further into why this is a Very Bad Thing, make sure you understand what these companies are, and are not. (Unless you're not a reader, and think that a few hundred words or so is some kind of a slog, rather than back in the day, being a SHORT read for an important topic. In that case, go watch Time Warner's CNN on your DirecTV or watch Comcast's MSNBC or Disney's ABC blissfully unaware.)

AT&T is not the original AT&T / Bell System that provided telephone service as a monopoly nearly all over the USA until the mid-1980s - it is instead the largest of the "Baby Bells" that was broken up by the antitrust courts back then. It's really Southwestern Bell. Which then purchased several other "Baby Bells" ending in buying the Southeast's BellSouth. It already had branded its wireless as Cingular, then bought the wireless business of the remaining original AT&T. Later it bought the remanants of its shrunken "mother", the original AT&T, after that old AT&T had also sold off all its technology prowess such as Bell Labs (which became Lucent, then Alcatel bought parts of it, and now it's in fragments all over other companies.)

Similarly, Time Warner has absolutely nothing to do with the cable-tv and cable-broadband company Time Warner Cable, and hasn't for nearly a decade. It also has not had anything to do with Time Magazine or the Time-Life family of magazines/websites, not for several years. And it's been well over a decade since it had nothing to do with AOL, despite your possible memories of "AOL Time Warner" - AOL was spun back out of Time Warner ages ago. Then, AOL bought Huffington Post and similar sites, and then Verizon (the other major remnant of the serveral of the old "Baby Bells) bought AOL. A year or two ago, Verizon also bought Yahoo.

Thus both companies already are the result of mega mergers, spinoffs, restructuring, and corporate shenannigans. Little of which benefited the general public, and for at least some of the disastrous mergers like AOL buying Time Warner back in the day, screwed shareholders too. (Remember, most working Americans ARE shareholders of major companies. You ARE "in Wall Street" if your job or you personally have any kind of a retirement plan, IRA, 401k - what do you think "index funds" have in them?) It's not like I'm fighting against a couple of little companies trying to get big enough. They already are giants, having at one point or another being gigantic and already pervasive in what you read, watch, see on your phones, tablets, TVs, in movies, on streaming services.

AT&T (the modern day one) already has a "cable tv" distribution service in its fiber uVerse offering, and yet was allowed during the prior administration to buy another pay TV distribution service, DirectTV. It has what is, depending on the most recent month's sales rivalry with Verizon, either the largest or 2nd largest mobile broadband network (cell phones / data). It has more of that than you think, because many other-brand prepaid and MVNO (virtual cell providers) use AT&T for some or all of their cellphone plans. (Much of Walmart / America Movil's Straight Talk service, same for America Movil's Net10 and Tracfone, independent H2O wireless and much more.) It already has control of a HUGE "pipe" into your home, car, handheld device.

Time Warner nowadays can best be thought of as "Warner Brothers Studios plus Turner Broadcasting System plus a bunch of other stuff". Even without its now spun-off publishing arm of the Time/Life family, and its long-ago spitting out of unwanted onetime hostile-acquirer AOL, it's also HUGE. Warner Brothers is its own famous TV and film studio and its many other brands. It's the "W" in "the CW" network (National Amusesments-controlled CBS Corp is the "C" in CW as a joint venture.) It's the owner of DC Comics, and the studio that produces both all the big (lousy) DC Comics movies, and all the DC Comics TV shows (Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, iZombie (all those on Warner's own CW), Gotham and Lucifer for 21st Century Fox's Fox TV, Krypton for Comcast's NBC Universal's SyFy network, Titans and Young Justice for DC's own announced streaming network. Not to mention all the NON-comicbook shows and movies. Meanwhile Turner Broadcasting System, which Warner bought from Ted Turner decades ago, has "Trump's 'favorite news'" CNN and its sister network HLN Headline News, TBS Superstation, Turner Classic Movies, and so many other cable TV channels.

Then there's HBO, and all the HBO shows. AT&T now owns Game of Thrones. Westworld. All the back catalog of The Sopranos, Rome, so much more.

The "W" part of the CW of the Warner networks part of Time Warner, in a few days part of AT&T, even is a part-owner, a small one, of the TV networks, films, and original series streaming platform Hulu. Which is increasingly an originals-oriented, and now a pay-only, competitor to Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

Think about that for a minute. AT&T, already owning major distribution services DirecTV, uVerse, various types of home internet, and the largest mobile broadband pipe, now owns so many production studios, broadcast networks, news networks, old film libraries, etc. Do you really think that AT&T is going to be "fair" in the pricing to show that content that it will demand from rival distribution providers Verizon Wireless / Fios fiber, Dish Network, Charter Communications Cable (which ended up buying Time Warner Cable/internet from NOT-Time-Warner Time Warner Cable), Cox Cable? How about licensing fees for TV on Google Fiber? Or to the relatively few remaining independent or municipal cable systems like Tacoma's? Do you think that Netflix and Amazon are going to get good deals for licenisng streaming rights for any Warner/CW/Turner movies, series, back-catalog?

It doesn't matter what they put in the deal. It matters that nobody, in a Democratic or Republican administration, whether a "traditional one" like Bush/Obama or a non-traditional "deliberate chaos" one like Trump's, has ever done a damn thing to crack down on any corporate abuse. Not seriously. Press-conference feel-good BS wrist-slapping, sure. But if you allow the mega-merger, then the "hijinks" will happen.

Don't blame Trump for this one, folks. He was on the side of the angels here, even if for the devil's own reasons. Blame our system, and ultimately thus blame ourselves, We The People, if we don't get more informed (which means reading things longer than tweets and blipvert-length soundbites) and then getting Mad As Hell so that we Don't Take It Anymore.

Here endeth the lesson. This time.

Shares of Time Warner jumped roughly 5 percent in extended trading. Shares of AT&T dropped as much as 2 percent.

I'm so used to #bingewatching @netflix series that's it's weird to watch the old-fashioned one episode per week style of @hbo. I am watching each episode of @WestworldHBO as they are released, and am looking forward to bingewatching Seasons 1 & 2 back to back. 'Black Panther' Is Top Winner at Golden Trailer Awards

Black Panther took home the top honor at this year’s Golden Trailer Awards.

For 19 years, the Golden Trailers have celebrated “the very best in motion picture marketing.” The ceremony took place at the Theatre at the Ace Hotel in Downtown, Los Angeles with more than 1,000 studio marketing executives, fans, stars, and trailer editors in attendance.

Create won “Best of Show” for the Black Panther trailer titled “Crown.”

Netflix, Fox, and Warner Bros each had big showings, winning more than 13 Golden Trailer Awards each.

Black Panther won the most individual Gold Trailer Awards, taking home the prize in 4 categories, including “Best of Show,” “Best Action,” “Best Action TV Spot,” and “Best Music TV Spot.”

Stranger Things 2 and Westworld Season Two won the most awards for television with three each. In the video game categories, Call of Duty: WWII won 3 awards.

The Golden Trailer Awards were launched in 1999 by Evelyn Watters and Monica Brady.

“It was another amazing year for marketers and for moviegoers who love trailers,” said Watters in a press release. “This competition recognizes a field of artists and editors who toil behind the scenes but are most responsible for filling theaters and getting people invested in what is coming soon to theaters around the world. Congratulations go out to all of this year’s honorees, but especially to the teams at Create, Disney, Marvel, Netflix, Fox, Warner Bros., Trailer Park, Mark Woollen & Associates and Buddha Jones, who created the most impactful and memorable trailers and marketing materials of the year. The judges couldn’t have been more wowed by their ingenuity and outstanding work.”

10 great sci-fi books to read before they become TV shows

By Rick Marshall
June 1, 2018

Science-fiction literature has always been fertile ground for movies and television, with generations of screenwriters and directors finding inspiration in fantastic and thought-provoking tales of what might be and what could have been. There’s no shortage of great sci-fi books being turned into movies right now, and there’s also a cornucopia of television series adapted from sci-fi books and graphic novels currently in the works.

From celebrated classics including Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series to more recent works like Justin Cronin’s The Passage, there’s currently a wide range of sci-fi literature in various stages of making the transition from page to screen. That means that if you’re looking to get ahead of the curve, there’s no time like the present to pick up a book and get a glimpse at the future.

We’ve put together a list of some of the great sci-fi books currently being turned into TV series, and we’ll update it over time as the shows premiere and other adaptations are announced. Feel free to leave a comment letting us know which adaptations you’re looking forward to, and check back for the latest additions.

3001: The Final Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke

The fourth and final installment of Arthur C. Clarke’s Space Odyssey series that began with 1968’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, this 1997 novel circles back to the saga’s roots for its concluding chapter. The story brings back the protagonist of 2001, Frank Poole, and continues to explore the nature of humanity’s origin and relationship to the mysterious monoliths created by the even-more-mysterious space- and time-traversing entities known as the “Firstborn.”

Stanley Kubrick’s groundbreaking 1968 film based on 2001 is widely regarded as one of the greatest science-fiction movies ever made, so it’s no surprise that the final chapter of the series has been the subject of development rumors ever since 3001was published. In 2014, Syfy announced plans for a miniseries based on 3001 with Ridley Scott attached as a producer, but other than a brief mention of it as “in development” in 2016, there’s been no update since the initial announcement.

Foundation series by Isaac Asimov

Considered one of the best sci-fi series ever written (and the recipient of a Hugo Award stating as much), Isaac Asimov’s Foundation saga unfolds over thousands of years in humanity’s history among the stars. The generation-spanning tale follows a brilliant mathematician and generations of scholars acting on his predictions as they attempt to preserve the collective wisdom of the human race ahead of an impending collapse of civilization. The series began as a trilogy, only to have Asimov add four more chapters to the story — both prequels and sequels — 30 years after the publication of the first book, Foundation.

Westworld co-creator Jonah Nolan announced in 2015 that he was developing a TV series based on the Foundation saga for HBO, only for that project to stall out. A new version of the project surfaced two years later with David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight) and Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds) as executive producers and showrunners, and Apple won a bidding war for the series in April 2018, giving it a straight-to-series order. There’s no information at this point about when the series will debut or which network (or streaming platform) will broadcast it.

Hyperion by Dan Simmons

Dan Simmons’ mind-bending, time-twisting saga follows a group of seven people in the far-flung future who are chosen for a pilgrimage to the enigmatic Time Tombs on the planet Hyperion in the midst of a galactic war. They know that one of the travelers is a spy for the enemy, and that the tombs — strange monuments that appear to be traveling backward in time — are guarded by the terrifying, metallic Shrike.

That’s the basic synopsis of Hyperion, the first novel in Simmons’ award-winning saga, and its fans include actor Bradley Cooper of The Hangover fame. Cooper is currently working with Syfy to adapt the saga as an “event series” — basically, an extended miniseries — with Boardwalk Empire writer Itamar Moses penning the script. There’s no word on how far along the project is at this point, but the adaptation was first announced back in 2015, so it’s anyone’s guess as to whether it will eventually find its way to television.

Luna: New Moon by Ian McDonald

Set 50 years after the colonization of the moon, Luna: New Moon chronicles the machinations and intrigue of the moon’s five ruling families as they battle for control. Known as “The Five Dragons,” the five dynasties sabotage, poison, marry, and backstab each other in a constant struggle to increase their influence over the feudal society that has developed on the lunar surface.

Ian McDonald’s novel has frequently been described as “Game of Thrones on the moon,” so it’s no surprise it was the subject of an intense bidding war for the adaptation rights. CBS Television won that war in 2015, and tasked writer-producer Shane Brennan (NCIS) with developing it for television.

Nightflyers by George R.R. Martin

A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin penned this 1980 story about the crew of a highly advanced, artificially intelligent spaceship on a mission to rendezvous with a mysterious alien species. When the eccentric crew members begin turning up dead, they’re forced to deal with a threat from within their own ship, the Nightflyer, as they hurtle through space.

Martin’s story was previously adapted as an otherwise forgettable 1987 film, but Nightflyers will return to the screen as a series on Syfy at some point in the fall. The series’ script was penned by Jeff Buhler (Jacob’s Ladder), who also serves as the project’s showrunner. In an introduction to the series’ first trailer, Martin described it as “a haunted house story on a starship,” and while he isn’t personally involved in the show (due to his contract with HBO for Game of Thrones), the first footage suggests it will live up to that description. Although the series will air on Syfy in the U.S., it will debut on Netflix outside the U.S.

The Passage by Justin Cronin

Justin Cronin’s 2010 novel chronicles the events that lead up to and follow humanity’s sudden and violent downfall after an immunity-boosting drug becomes a terrifying virus that turns people into superhuman, vampire-like creatures hungry for blood. Part of the initial novel is set in the time leading up to the emergence of the virus, while the latter portion of the novel picks up several generations later as humanity is struggling to survive in walled-off colonies around the country. The Passage was followed by The Twelve in 2012, and the trilogy-concluding novel The City of Mirrors in 2016.

Ridley Scott’s production company Scott Free Productions initially planned to adapt the novels as a film trilogy, only to decide that television — specifically the Fox network — was a better home for the story in 2016. The first trailer for The Passage premiered in May 2018, and featured Mark-Paul Gosselaar as FBI agent Brad Wolgast, who’s tasked with procuring test subjects for the drug, and Saniyya Sidney as Amy Bellafonte, a 10-year-old orphan who gets caught up in Wolgast’s mission. There’s no premiere date set for the series yet.

Ringworld by Larry Niven

This 1970 novel follows a man living on Earth in 2850 A.D. who decides — mostly out of boredom — to join an expedition to a mysterious, ring-shaped vessel discovered beyond the boundaries of known space. Niven’s novel spawned four sequels and four prequels, and also inspired future sci-fi storytellers in various media to use similar, ring-shaped megastructures in their tales, including the “Halo Array” in the Halo video game series.
Initially picked up by Syfy for development as a television series, Ringworld was later shifted to Amazon Studios for adaptation. The series was one of several sci-fi projects the studio picked up for its streaming video platform, but the 2017 announcement of the adaptation wasn’t accompanied by any additional information about the show.

The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

The second novel from acclaimed sci-fi author Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., The Sirens of Titan sends the richest, most privileged man in 22nd century Earth on an interplanetary journey of self-discovery as a war between Earth and Mars looms. The adventures of protagonist Malachi Constant serve as an exploration of the nature of free will, among other philosophical concepts, and the value of human history.
Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon and Small Crimes writer Evan Katz are adapting Sirens of Titan for television, with Harmon citing Vonnegut’s work as a major influence on his own sci-fi storytelling. The involvement of Harmon and Katz was first announced in July 2017, and that was the most recent update on the project.

Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson

Hiro Protagonist is a part-time pizza delivery guy and full-time hacker in this 1992 cyberpunk classic that has Hiro and his pal Y.T. (Yours Truly) navigating a future world in which the government has ceded control to criminal organizations and massive corporations. When Hiro comes into possession of a dangerous data file, he soon finds himself at the center of a mystery with implications for both the real world and the Metaverse, a virtual-reality internet where coding ability is power.
In August 2017, Amazon Studios announced that it planned to turn Stephenson’s novel into a drama series for its streaming video platform. Attack the Block director Joe Cornish was previously attached to direct a movie adaptation of the book, and Amazon indicated that he’ll slide into an executive producer role on the television series. There’s been no update on the series since that point.

Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra

What would happen if every male mammal in the world suddenly died, leaving one guy and his pet monkey as the only living carriers of the “Y” chromosome? That’s the premise of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s groundbreaking, award-winning comic book series that debuted in 2002 and followed amateur escape artist Yorick Brown and his Capuchin monkey pal, Ampersand, on an epic journey that brought them around the world as they dealt with the ramifications of every other man (and male monkey) suddenly dropping dead for unknown reasons.

One of the greatest comic book series of the modern era, Y: The Last Man has been the subject of numerous failed adaptation attempts over the years, but the latest effort appears to be progressing at a quietly steady pace. After it was initially announced in 2015 that FX was developing the series with Vaughan onboard as a writer and co-producer, Michael Green (American Gods) and Aida Mashaka Croal (Jessica Jones) were named co-showrunners on the project. FX announced in April 2018 that it had ordered a pilot for the series, but the production timeline — and any casting for the series — is unknown at this point.
